Reflections on Haiti and the blessings of being American

Every now and then an event will occur that humbles me and reminds me of how blessed I am to be an American citizen. I could have been born in a Third World country. I could have been born to poverty in an area lacking decent drinking water and food. I could have been born in a country where women have no rights and where there are no freedoms or choices.

Like most reading this article, I was born in the U.S.A., the greatest country in the world—warts and all. How blessed I feel that I can stop by a corner store to purchase bottled water if I need to. Yet, in places such as Haiti, the water is contaminated, food scarce, poverty rampant. It could have been me but by the grace of God, it wasn’t.

When the Haiti tragedy struck, I was shocked and felt helpless as I watched the reports about what had happened. Just checking out the death, despair and destruction was almost too much to endure.

If you are feeling like I felt, one thing we can do is give. Haiti will be in dire need for a very long time. Below are a few charity sources that you may check out, if you desire.
