Cleaning Ladies and Theft

I received an email today from a man who thought that for $60 he could get his apartment cleaned.  I explained to him that legitimate cleaning companies have insurance and overhead, so they cannot clean his apartment for such a rate.  I further explained that only a “cleaning lady” could do so (although I cannot imagine she would labor so hard for such a cheap rate).

In any event, you get what you pay for in life.  And those who want to go out and hire a cleaning lady from off the street are welcome to do so at their own risk.  An example of such a risk is in the article below:

Gisella Helen Pankotai, a Hamilton resident and former cleaning lady for a number of Penningtonians, was arrested last month by Hamilton Township Police for an unknown offense, which led to the revelation that she’d allegedly been robbing the Pennington homeowners who employed her.

The news was announced at the Dec. 6 meeting of the Pennington Borough Council by council president Weed Tucker, from a press release prepared by Sgt. Steven Friedman of Pennington Borough Police Department.

“November saw a notable increase in thefts,” Tucker said. “This was due to a cleaning woman who’d been cleaning several Pennington houses, and while cleaning them, had removed a few items.”

Tucker did not disclose exactly what items were stolen, but he did mention that the pattern of thefts is believed to have gone on since May. None of the thefts were reported in Pennington Borough, nor were they discovered until Hamilton Police arrested Pankotai on unrelated charges in their jurisdiction.

“Further investigation revealed that Pennington Borough had several victims of theft who did not even know they were victims,” Tucker said.
