The holiday classic, A Christmas Carol is due to commence on November 17 through December 18th at the Metro Stage Theater in Alexandria, Virginia. If you are anything like me, you were probably scared witless the first time you saw the television version. I know I was. And besides that, it appeared to be such a loooooong story back then when I was a child.

I believe in theater and culture as well as in supporting small theaters. Be certain to check it out if you can!

Check this out:

Due to budget reductions, the commonwealth’s Department of Transportation is looking for residents to help keep the grass cut along state roads. Nearly half of VDOT’s annual mowing budget was cut. Right now, grass along low-volume primary and most secondary routes will be mowed no more than twice. The lawn mower will visit unpaved routes and subdivision streets once unless the tall grass presents a safety issue.

This is the perfect opportunity for some old fashioned community bonding and fellowship. This could be a positive thing for VA residents…..and even a great way for students to earn community service hours if it’s not considered too dangerous for them to be out there. Let us take a hint from communities such as the Amish who are known to help each other out in hard times. Grab those lawn mowers, Virginia and start working!

You’ll end up with Washington, DC’s hippest new startup—Deals for Deeds. What’s not to love about this company? Great deals, eco friendly, and they support local charities.

Here is how it works. A local, eco friendly company agrees to offer an incredible 50% discount on a product or service. The deal gets posted to the Deals for Deeds website with the understanding that an agreed upon target number of consumers must purchase the highlighted product or service before the deal is finalized.

What results is a win-win situation in which the consumers are thrilled with their unique and fantastic deal and the local company has had the opportunity to introduce its product or service to new and potential clients who otherwise may never have heard of them.

Yes, there are similar companies out there. But this one is different in that 5% of their earnings go to a local charity. In fact, one of their taglines is The DC Area’s Daily Deal Site For The Common Good.

I was one of the fortunate ones who received an invitation recently to attend their Grand Opening party. Held at the Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections (ACKC) in DC, this opening event was a huge success which attracted a steady and heavy flow of friendly well wishers and supporters.

The brains behind Deals for Deeds are Josh Hoffman and Harrison Miller—two talented twenty-ish fireballs of energy and ideas who have taken this great concept and perfected it to the good of local charities, consumers and businesses.

Check them out at www.dealsfordeeds.com. And yes, they are open to suggestions for charities to assist and businesses to highlight. Contact is also available via their email address which is info@dealsfordeeds.com…and of course they can be found on Facebook and Linkedin!

Have you gotten your group on yet? If not, be certain to get this website on your radar and join their mailing list.

Here is how it works.

1. Every day a local company agrees to offer a deal to the general public at deeply slashed prices—at least 50% off.

2. The featured company sets a minimum amount that they will accept for the deal to become active. For example, perhaps they are offering $50 meals for only $25. Well, in order to take advantage, at least 100 people will need to pre-order. Once that 100 people sign on…..the deal is ON!

3. The deal is good for 24 hours and then is no longer valid

It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. The featured company has the potential to earn loyal clients who return again and again, and the consumers receive top rated services and products at affordable prices.

Check them out at www.groupon.com

—————————————————————

DEALS FOR DEEDS is emerging!

I am happy to report that there is a similar company about to emerge! And this one is great because a percentage of their sales will go to a local charity. They are called Deals For Deeds and their address is www.dealsfordeeds.com

Check out the details for their launch party:

Please join us as we celebrate the launch of DealsForDeeds.com, DC’s daily deal site for the common good! The event will be held at ACKC – 1529c 14th Street, NW on Tuesday, April 27th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Complimentary beer, wine, and surprises provided. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the daily-deal concept, it’s pretty simple: every day we present you with a deeply discounted deal (50% off or more) on the coolest things to eat, see, or do throughout the DC area.

Deals For Deeds is not your average daily deal site. It connects environmentally and socially conscious consumers with the local businesses and charitable organizations that share their passion, right in their own communities. A percentage of every purchase you make is donated to your choice of three featured local charities. We’re pleased to announce that Washington Animal Rescue League, Habitat for Humanity of Washington, DC, and Food & Friends will be our featured charity partners for the first month.

Come and learn more about Deals For Deeds and mingle with local business owners, trend-setters, and reps from local charities.

She started the nonprofit organization after her best friend, Ali passed away following a 30 year battle with cancer.

The reason UpperCrust Maids supports this organization is because we like the fact that this grassroots organization is personable. They go straight to the needs of the women, offering financial and emotional support.

The fundraiser that I attended tonight was in the form of a pleasant cocktail party where we were lavished with all types of delicious edibles and treated like royalty. During the cocktail portion, a silent fund raising auction took place (UpperCrust donated 4 cleanings to the auction).

The evening ended with a fashion show that had a hilarious and fun twist. The models took their cute little pooches down the runway with them and yes, the pooches stole the show.

If you are in search of a great organization to support, this one would be worth considering.
